USS Nautilus

I visited Admiral Hyman Rickover's technological masterpiece on November 13, 2004.  It was a moving experience standing on a piece of history...the first nuclear powered submarine, the first vessel to traverse the north pole...I remember an old friend of mine saying that when he was in the Navy he remembers seeing a submarine in the distance from his Battleship.  When the sub got closer he and the crewmen saw the sub's SSN-571 registry numbers and they all stopped and stared "It was like seeing the Virgin Mary" he recalled.

The museum is located in Groton, Connecticut and is part of the US Submarine Force Museum, which is free and open to the public (see http://www.ussnautilus.org/ for details).
