When to go:

The best time to go is spring, summer and autumn.  Winter brings unpredictable weather and bitter cold and limited access on the park's roads.

Route Selection:

There is only one (wide and paved) path from the parking area to the summit.

 

Hotel and Climb Reservation:

No guide, permit, or trail reservations are required.

Getting There:

Once entering the Smokey Mountains National Park proceed to the Sugarlands Visitor's Center. From that point go south on Highway 441 for 13 miles to Clingmans Dome Road. Turn right and continue 7 miles to the parking area..

Trip Description:

The Smokey Mountains National Park is vast and offers diverse topology and scenery...take advantage of as much of it as you can during your visit. The path to Clingmans Dome is a popular tourist destination, so be prepared for crowds and bus-loads of tourists. The hike itself is about 1/2 mile to the summit with only 300 feet of elevation gain. There is a large observation structure at the summit that affords exceptional views in all directions.
