When to go:

The access trail and parking area to Brokeoff Mountain are along Route 89  (the southern entry road into Lassen National Park) about 4.5 miles north of State Road 36. The trail and mountain is actually within the borders of Lassen Volcanic National Park, although the trail-head and parking area are located before the fee station (NOTE: technically, the park entrance fee must be paid before parking).  Although the park road is closed from (approximately) November through June (when you can expect dangerous winter conditions on the mountain), the access road is usually plowed just past the southern fee station.  Expect snow anytime.  I climbed in early October.

Route Selection:

The trail is 5 miles round-trip with about 2,600 feet of elevation gain.

Hotel and Climb Reservation:

No guide, permit, or trail reservations are required.  There are almost no hotels in the immediate area.  The Drakesbad area of the park offers a few cabins (with no electricity or running water).  There are also one or two bed and breakfast facilities in the nearby area.  Numerous hotels are located in Reading, about 90 minutes to the west.

Standard light hiking gear and water for a day hike.  Cold weather gear as required.
